What Is Flagyl?

Flagyl contains metronidazole, an antibiotic belonging to the nitroimidazole class. It is commonly used to treat infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, including bacterial vaginosis, dental infections, and certain stomach and intestinal infections.

How to Take Flagyl

Flagyl is usually prescribed as a seven-day course for bacterial vaginosis:

  • Take one 400mg tablet twice a day (every 12 hours) for 7 days (total 14 tablets).
  • Swallow tablets whole with a glass of water after food to reduce stomach discomfort.
  • Avoid alcohol during treatment and for 48 hours after finishing the course, as it may cause severe reactions.

Possible Side Effects

While most people tolerate Flagyl well, some may experience side effects.

Common Side Effects:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Metallic taste in the mouth
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • Upset stomach or diarrhoea

Serious Side Effects (Seek Medical Help Immediately):

  • Allergic reactions – swelling of the face, lips, or throat, difficulty breathing
  • Severe skin reactions – blistering, peeling, or a rash with fever
  • Neurological symptoms – confusion, dizziness, difficulty speaking, blurred or double vision
  • Jaundice – yellowing of the skin or eyes

Warnings and Precautions

Do not take Flagyl if you:

  • Are allergic to metronidazole or similar antibiotics.
  • Have severe liver disease or are on dialysis.
  • Cannot stop drinking alcohol, as it may cause severe nausea, vomiting, and hot flushes.

Speak to your doctor before taking Flagyl if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding – your doctor will assess if it’s suitable for you.
  • Take medications such as warfarin (blood thinner), lithium, epilepsy drugs, or immunosuppressants.
  • Have a history of blood disorders or neurological conditions.
